Sectional Extendable Borescopes
As rigid borescopes became widely used, it became apparent that
units with a long working length could be a valuable inspection
tool in certain applications. However, the problems of transporting
and storing very long optical instruments presented a number of
logistical problems. To meet this need, Lenox Instrument introduced
the concept of a sectional, extendable borescope. These units are
modular in design and allow the user to add extender sections to
provide very long working lengths. Originally developed in 1920
to inspect huge steam turbines, Lenox sectional borescopes were
adopted by the U.S. Army during World War II to inspect gun barrels.
Today, they are the industry standard for applications where uncompromising
image quality and user control over length are critical. No other
rigid borescope delivers such exceptional image resolution with
this much length adaptability.

Lenox sectional borescopes will fit into openings as small as 4 mm,
provide working lengths from 12 in. to 1200 in., and deliver resolution
to allow identification of flaws as small as 0.0005 in. Probe diameters
available include 4, 5.5, 8, 10, 12, 23, 35, 45, and 70 mm. These units
are used to inspect tubing, drill pipe, vessels and chambers, chemical
reactors, hydraulic cylinders, heat exchangers, aircraft landing gear,
radioactive equipment, power generation equipment, process lines,
vats, rocket casings, foundations of dams and structures, helicopters,
tank cars and much more. And, all units are video and digital adaptable.
Today, Lenox offers two types of sectional, extendable borescopes:
the Universal Inspector with a fiberoptic light source and the extendable
borescope family, with an incandescent light source.
Universal Inspector
The Universal Inspector is a high quality, expandable, fiberoptic
borescope system that addresses current and future inspection needs
by allowing you to add additional components as needs change. Lenox
Universal Inspector will replace up to 18 conventional rigid borescopes
with one affordable, convenient, state-of-the-art system. Using
this modular system, you can enter through openings as small as
4 mm, go in up to 60 in., and inspect via direct, right angle, forward
oblique or retrospective viewing angles with 10º to 85º
fields of view and 360º orbital viewing.
Universal Inspector provides a versatile solution of interchangeable
components that can be purchased separately as needs change. The heart
of the system is the universal eyepiece assembly that includes a universal
scope and focus control. Attaching a rotatable objective sleeve (available
in right angle, forward oblique and retrospective viewing) completes
the system. The system can be quickly expanded and reconfigured by
replacing the objective sleeve with one or more thread-on extensions
and one of six objective viewing heads.

The Universal Inspector can replace a number of different instruments
to provide a complete inspection capability at a significantly lower
cost. You can configure a system to meet your immediate needs, then
add capabilities by adding in-stock components as your needs change.
Extendable Borescopes
Lenox extendable borescopes are supplied as a complete kit in
two models: with a diameter of 23 mm and a working length of 28
in., or with a 35 mm diameter and working length of 53 in. The instruments
consist of two sections that are threaded together. When you need
to increase the working length, you simply unthread the two sections
and add one or more extender sections. By adding extender sections,
you can increase the working length up to 1200 in.
Each extendable borescope comes complete with probe body and eyepiece
with adjustable focus, right-angle viewing head with objective lens
(usually 55 field of view, although fields of view from 15 to
180 are available), variable transformer, spare incandescent lamps
(a black light attachment is one of many accessories available)
and a fitted protective case. Threaded extender sections are available
in 36 in. and 60 in., lengths. And, you can choose from five different
optional interchangeable viewing heads. All Lenox extendable borescopes
are digital and video adaptable.
